Paint

Interior paint a whole home

Room count, average size, and whether the ceilings get paint.

Use this when you want a whole-house paint budget without measuring every room. Enter the room count and the average floor area. A 10-by-10 bedroom is 100 square feet. A 12-by-12 is 144. A 14-by-16 living room is 224. Each room is treated as a square with 8-foot walls. One door and one window, 36 square feet, come off each room.

Turn ceilings on if they are painted in the same trip. The ceiling area is the floor area you entered, at the same price as the walls. Halls, closets, and stairs are included only if you count them as rooms or raise the average size.

Paint grade, coverage, and labor match the single-room calculator. This page will not catch a two-story foyer, heavy texture, or walls that need primer. Primer on raw drywall is about another coat of the same gallons. The result is a 2026 US national average to take into a walkthrough, not a bid for your zip code.

Worked example

Eight rooms at 144 square feet of floor each are the starting inputs, with ceilings off and standard paint at two coats. Each room is treated as a 12-foot square. The walls are about 348 square feet after one door and one window, and eight rooms are 2,784 square feet.

Paint, supplies, and labor use the same rates as the single-room tool. The typical total with labor is $9,095, built from $1,161 of materials and $7,934 of labor. Low is $5,592 and high is $13,917.

Turn ceilings on and the floor area of each room is added to the paintable surface. A hall you forgot to count will not appear unless you add a room or raise the average size.
