Kitchen remodel

Cosmetic, mid-range, or full gut, from cabinets through appliances.

Kitchens are three scopes, not one price per square foot, because cabinets dwarf the cost of paint. Cosmetic keeps the boxes and refreshes finish, hardware, sink, a short backsplash, lights, and wall paint. Mid-range replaces cabinets and counters in the same layout, with quartz, a new floor, and a mid appliance package. Full gut lets the sink move, adds an island allowance, and steps the cabinets and appliances up.

Small, average, and large scale the cabinets, counters, floor, and backsplash. An average kitchen here is a normal remodel, not a 400-square-foot great room. Appliances move less than the cabinets, because a range is still a range. Uncheck a line you are keeping.

The appliance line is a whole package plus a basic install, not a luxury built-in suite. Design fees are not included. A gut job in an older house often finds bad wiring or a soft subfloor, which is why the high column sits well above the typical one. All of this is a 2026 US national average.

Kitchen size

Average is a normal remodel, not a 400 sq ft great room. Large scales cabinets, counters, and the island.

Worked example

The page opens on a mid-range remodel of an average kitchen. Cabinets and counters are replaced in the same layout. There is no island in this preset. Every line starts checked.

Semi-custom cabinets are $16,700 typical before the preset's low and high spread. The full typical total with labor is $44,330, from $27,320 of materials and $17,010 of labor. Low is $33,557 and high is $62,877.

Cosmetic keeps the boxes and the total drops to a refinishing job. Full gut adds layout plumbing and an island allowance. Change the size to large if the kitchen is well over a normal run of cabinets. Uncheck appliances if you are keeping the ones you have, and remember that line is the whole package.
